Chapter 11: No Way Out

Part I: Rachel Tries to Flee

She waited until morning. Or what she assumed was morning—light never seemed to fully penetrate the windows anymore. The shadows hung too long, too still, like they were nailed in place. Every hour felt like a standoff with the house, and she was losing.

Rachel crept through the rooms, her footsteps silent across warped wooden boards. Her arms were tightly wrapped in makeshift bandages torn from bedsheets, and the carvings on her back pulsed beneath her skin like they were still being written. She didn’t know what the house had done to her during the night—only that it had claimed her.

Daniel was nowhere to be seen. Not in the kitchen. Not upstairs. Not in the basement. His absence didn’t feel like safety—it felt like bait.

She didn’t call his name.

Instead, she moved with urgency. Every breath a countdown.

She found the keys still on the kitchen counter—right where she had left them the day before. That should have felt like a small victory, but it didn’t. They felt too available, as though left there on purpose.

She didn’t care. She snatched them up, pulled on her coat, and bolted through the front door.

The cold bit instantly. Not the usual winter bite, but something deeper. Something old. The kind of cold that seeped into your bones and made you feel like a ghost in your own body. The sky above was gray and low, clouded like a sick lung. The forest surrounding the property stood like a wall—motionless. No wind, no birds, no breath.

The world was holding her hostage.

She climbed into the SUV, turned the key.

The engine hesitated.

Then roared to life.

She sobbed with relief, clutching the wheel. “Come on, come on…”

She threw it into reverse, backed down the frost-bitten gravel driveway. Trees leaned in on either side, tall and bare, their branches brittle and clawlike. She accelerated.

The road dipped. Then rose. Then dipped again.

She didn’t look back.

Then she saw her.

A woman stood in the middle of the road.

At first Rachel thought it was Evelyn. The nightgown, the dark hair. But the face—no, it couldn’t be Evelyn. This face was wrong. Melted. Blank. A patchwork of features. A suggestion of humanity without any truth to it.

The woman’s arms were behind her back, like she was holding something.

Rachel screamed and slammed the brakes.

The SUV skidded, tires screeching across ice. She swerved hard to the right, trying to avoid impact—

—and hit a tree instead.

The sound was thunder.

Airbags exploded into her chest. Glass cracked like bone. Her forehead snapped forward against the wheel. Pain bloomed behind her eyes.

For a moment, everything was silent again.

Then came the ringing.

Her vision pulsed. Blood ran hot down her scalp. Her ears buzzed. She blinked until the blur cleared.

The woman in the road was gone.

Rachel fumbled at the door handle. It wouldn’t open. She shoved her shoulder against it until it finally gave.

She stumbled out into the frost. Her leg screamed in protest. Her ribs burned.

She turned to face the woods—

—and there it was.

The house.

Through the trees.
